Princess Terunomiya’s question about Galactosan

Princess Terunomiya (Lady Shigeko Higashikuni) asked a question about Galactosan

Princess Terunomiya, the first princess of then the Showa Emperor, visited our Tokyo Plant on November 17, 1949, along with her mother. They were guided by the President Manabu Matsumoto, Plant Director Hidezo Ukon, and Manager Hideo Yasuda, and inspected the manufacturing processes for Biosmael, “Nurtlogen,” and constipation remedy “Malt Extract.” The princess then asked, “I still have the Glactosan I obtained two years ago for the older child. Can I still use is for the younger one?” Manager Yasuda, who was giving commentaries, was impressed by the Imperial Family’s attitude to keep and not to waste anything.

The first therapeutic milk formula, Galactosan

Galactosan

Galactosan was the first made-in-Japan therapeutic milk formula, developed by Wakodo in 1918. It had a protein fortified formula intended for young children suffering digestive insufficiency or malnutrition caused by diarrhea. It was popular because it supplied plenty of protein and was still safe in treating diarrhea. It was also listed in Japan Pharmacopeia under the name Casein Calc. Its use, however, declined as use of antibiotics became a common practice.
