Empress Kojun tried Grismael

Empress Kojun tried Grismael (Wakodo Product), the first made-in-Japan infant food

In 1937, Empress Kojun, who was raising the fifth princess Suganomiya, was recommended Grismael by then court physician Dr. Takuo Endoh. He described the attempt as, Empress Kojun might have cooked too small a quantity on too much heat, resulting in a burnt pot. Her Majesty laughed about it, saying, “This is difficult to prepare.”

The first made-in-Japan baby food was Grismael. Early childhood mortality then was 107 deaths in every 1000, caused mostly by pneumonia, digestive failure, malnutrition, and GI diseases. This situation made it even more urgent to develop an easy to digest, nutritional supplement food suitable for young children. Wakodo successfully developed a rice-based gelatinized gruel product in 1937. A 500g can with a replaceable push-in lid was sold for one yen.
